Easter
Easter
A week before Easter, Palm Sunday is celebrated with a procession of St Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu. The procession is accompanied by all the Corfu brass bands in their colourful uniforms.
On White Saturday, a special tradition is observed in Corfu, when at 11am people start throwing ceramic containers filled with water out of windows. This celebrates the first resurrection of Jesus. This strange custom is perhaps meant to express people's indignation at Judas' betrayal, or to symbolically cleanse them of their sins, which are thrown out with the water in the jars. The streets are full of shards, the fragments of which some keep for good luck throughout the year.
